Clothing tips for Family Portraits

If you’re planning on having a professional photographer take your family’s portraits, it’s important to think about what you’re going to wear ahead of time. You want to look your best, but you also want to be comfortable and coordinated. Here are a few tips on what to wear for your next family portrait session!

1. Be Timeless
2. Coordinate your outfits
3. Choose colors that complement each other
4. Patterns or too many colors.
5. Make sure everyone is comfortable in their clothes
6. Accessorize tastefully
7. Bring a change of clothes if necessary

Clothing tips for Family Portraits

1. Be timeless.

Classic clothes will never go out of style and will always look good in photos. Clothing can easily date your portrait. For that reason, we often suggest simple clothing with a timeless cut and style. Long-sleeves work for most portraits, taking attention away from the arms and keeping focus on the faces and express.

2. Coordinate your outfits.

Family portraits are an occasion to look your best. You don’t have to match but try getting everyone to wear variations of the same color a similar style of clothing for a cohesive look. Clothes should complement each other.

3. Choose colors that complement each other.

When you’re picking out clothes for a family portrait, it’s important to choose colors that compliment each other. You don’t want anyone to stick out like a sore thumb! Neutral colors, cool tones, light colors, or analogous colors typically work well together.

4. Patterns or too many colors.

Bold patterns and bright colors can be distracting in portraits and take away from the focus on your faces. But if its your style, you may want to consider pairing bold patterns with solids. Try to avoid wearing clothing with large logos or too many colors. If everyone in the portrait is wearing a different color, it will be hard for the eye to know where to rest.

5. Make sure everyone is comfortable in their clothes.

This may seem like an obvious one, but you’d be surprised how often people show up to a session uncomfortable in what they’re wearing. If your clothes are too tight, you’ll be pulling at them the entire time and you won’t look relaxed. If your shoes are uncomfortable, you’ll be thinking about them the whole time. It’s important to be comfortable in what you’re wearing so that you can relax and enjoy the session.

6. Accessorize tastefully.

Less is usually more when it comes to accessories. A few simple pieces can go a long way. If you’re going to wear jewelry, make sure it’s not too flashy or distracting. The same goes for any other accessories you might be wearing, like scarves, hats, or glasses. A simple necklace or scarf can add a touch of personality to your outfit without looking too overdone.

7. Bring a change of clothes.

If you have an outfit you love but it’s not quite right for the session, consider bringing a change of clothes. This is especially important if you’re doing an outdoor session and your outfit doesn’t work with the location. It’s also a good idea to bring a change of clothes if you have small children who might get dirty during the session. If you’re not sure what to wear, bring a backup outfit just in case.

By following these tips, you’ll be sure to look great in your next family portrait!

Houston Senior Photography

Houston Senior Portrait Photographer, Michael Carr, CPP, is a modern, contemporary and classic High School Senior Portrait Photographer.  Michael offers both in studio and location high school senior portrait sessions.

Here are a few tips for our senior portrait sessions:

1. What? Our portrait process begins with a phone consultation.

During this phone consult we will discuss the individual being photographed and the logistics involved behind the session. In addition, we will discuss clothing attire and overall photography goals of the session. What type of images are you looking for: classic, timeless, indoor, outdoor, contemporary, architecture?

These are just a few examples of what we would be discussing during the planning phase. From studio to destinations, we have the experience to photographed most of our client’s requests.  We recommend that you review our portfolio or call the studio to discuss your vision and thoughts.

2. When and Where? Portrait sessions may be scheduled during the week, and we do offer limited Saturday sessions as well.

A note about location photography assignments: some locations with Houston do require a photographer’s permit to photograph on their grounds.  If a photographer’s permit is required, please note this fee is an additional charge. Some locations will photograph better in the morning versus the afternoon.

Also, if you are wanting to have hair and makeup services added to your session, we need to consider that when scheduling your session time as well.

3. The Objective. As a Houston Senior Photography, our style is commonly defined as unique, clean and refreshing.

Our senior sessions are not your traditional senior cap and gown photography sessions. For in studio Houston Senior Photography sessions, each high school senior’s session is created using custom studio sets and the theme is based on the senior’s personality and the artist’s creative vision. Our studio sets are constantly changing.

The goal is to capture something different and special for every graduating high school senior. Many of our high school senior pictures are shared as formal senior portraits in the home, college applications, sorority portraits and web sized images for Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms.

Research your portrait photography market for your style of business portraiture. Prices vary from low to high in all markets but compare at least 3 studio’s portfolios before basing a decision on price alone. Reshoots can be a costly mistake.

Professional business attire is a key element in business portraits. Before a session, we recommend trying on 2 suit jackets to ensure a proper fit. For our market, a blue, gray or black suit jacket work well for our local industries. Click here for our clothing tips.

Capturing the right expression for your industry is critical. The incorrect expression can do more harm than good for an online presence. A professional can help create the correct expression for a specific industry.

Professional lighting can add or subtract weight to the subject’s face or overall image. The basic principles of broad lighting and short lighting techniques can help assist with some the lighting challenges.

Professional studio backgrounds can add impact to an overall mood of a portrait. If you are looking for a change or an update to your headshot image, a professional can recommend and create a lighting design that will achieve such results.

Body language is paramount. Seek a professional who’s attention to detail encompasses proper business posture. Improper posing can leave business attire unflattering and ill fitted. Business leaders should look like business leaders.

Why Professional Family Portraits Are Worth the Investment

Think about the last time you had a family portrait taken.

Maybe it was for a holiday card, or maybe you just wanted to capture some memories of your loved ones. If you’re like most people, you probably ended up taking the photos yourself with your phone or camera. While these photos may be nice, they likely don’t compare to professional family portraits.

Professional Family Portraits

Here’s why professional family portraits are worth the investment:

Quality: Professional photographers have the experience and professional equipment to take high-quality photographs that you’ll cherish for years to come.

Printed Portraits: Most professional photographers will provide you with professional printed portraits. You can choose how to display them on your walls in your home or desktop on an entry table.

Memories: Family portraits are a way to capture memories of your loved ones that you can look back on for years to come.

Priceless: While family portraits may seem like a luxury, they’re actually priceless. That’s because they capture memories of your loved ones that you can’t put a price tag on.

So, if you’re thinking about getting a family portrait taken, be sure to hire a professional photographer. You won’t regret it.

I hope this article was helpful in convincing you to invest in professional family portraits. If you have any questions or would like to book a session, please do not hesitate to call the studio at 713-461-2862.

5 Tips for Families Before Their Portrait Session

5 Tips for Families Before Their Portrait Session

5 Tips for Families Before Their Portrait Session

Spring is approaching and this is the perfect time to photograph your outdoor family portraits in Houston! We have compiled a list of our 5 helpful tips for families before their portrait session. Michael Carr, one of Houston’s top family photographers, has over 20 years of photographic experience and will make sure your Family Portrait is beautifully crafted. We will help you with coordinating and planning clothing for your family portrait to make sure everyone looks their best. Here are the 5 tips for families before their portrait session:

  1. Scheduling
The timing of your family portrait session is very important. We recommend early morning, around 9am, or late afternoon, around 4pm. As summer approaches, 6:30pm may become an option. We use a balance mixture of natural light along with location lighting equipment and specialized light modifiers to insure everyone is lit properly. The portable location lighting is equivalent to studio lighting but in an outdoor setting resulting in crisp well exposed portraits, eliminating dark eyes or non- directional lighting in the final portrait. We will work with you to determine the best time of day for your portrait based on the location as well everyone’s schedules. If young children are to be included in your portrait, you should pick the time that is not right during their nap time but when they are at their best. For outdoor portraits we always recommend scheduling two dates in the event of rain or bad weather. We do have a studio available which can also serve as an option for your family portrait should weather become an issue.
  1. Clothing Selection
Everyone’s clothing does not need to match in colors, but there should be harmony with everyone’s attire in the portrait. For example, if you want a casual spring or summer portrait then the children could wear shorts with light colored tops or dresses, and the adults could wear casual pants and khakis with light colored shirts and blouses.

Colors should be complimentary and in the same tonal range. It is always recommended to stick to solid colors or a very small pattern. Long sleeve shirts work best as well.

We will discuss your portrait vision and clothing options during your pre-portrait consultation.
Family Portrait in Houston
  1. Hair and Makeup
For men and children in the portrait, we recommend a hair trim about 2 weeks before your portrait. For ladies, a trim or haircut and color if needed 2 weeks before your portrait is recommended. This is not the time to try a new hair color or a new haircut or hair style! We partner with a nearby salon that takes care of our client’s hair and makeup for their portrait. The salon will help you look your best and make sure you are picture perfect. Remember to have a manicure and pedicure the day before your portrait too! On the day of your portrait bring a hair brush and comb, powder, lipstick or gloss and makeup for touchups during your session.
Outdoor family portrait
  1. Get Plenty of Rest
Rest is so important before your portrait. If you are tired it will show in your images. Go to bed early and stay well hydrated before your portrait.
  1. Portrait Location and Scale
During your consultation, we will discuss where you plan on hanging your selected portrait in your home. This is important for us photography wise so we capture your images with the end in mind. For example, if the space warrants a vertical portrait, we want to make sure we have plenty of vertical images for you to select from.

During your portrait order appointment, we will project your images in our studio and can also show you the proper size portrait based on the space in your home where the portrait will reside.
