What to Expect During a Family Photography Session

What to Expect During a Family Photography Session

Michael recently photographed this senior and family portrait in the Tanglewood area at their home. When we are commissioned for a portrait, clients often ask us what to expect during a family photography session. Below are a few highlights of what to expect during your portrait session:

  1. Consultation

We had a portrait consultation over the phone to discuss date and location. This family wanted to have their senior and family portrait session at their home to keep it simple and relaxed. We scheduled a time to visit their home before the session so we could see areas of their home that would work nicely for their portrait session. During this site visit we were also able to review their clothing selections for their portrait.

  1. Communication

During the session we keep the conversation light and love to learn more about you and your family. This helps us to bring out great expressions and a relaxed feel to your portrait. We strive to not pose you in uncomfortable poses and instead keep everyone comfortable and at ease.

  1. Completion

After we complete your session, we schedule a time for you to come into the studio and view the artist proofs and suggestions. We project your images and size them to the correct size and scale for your walls in your home. We want you to see your finished portrait in actual size and love it!

We loved capturing a variety of indoor and outdoor portraits for this family. We know they will treasure these family portraits for many years to come.

Houston Senior Portrait Photographer

Houston Senior Portrait Photographer, Michael Carr, CPP, is a modern, contemporary and classic High School Senior Portrait Photographer.  Michael offers both in studio and location high school senior portrait sessions.

Our High School Senior sessions are created using a blend of commercial photography and fashion techniques.  This type of photography is commonly used in magazines and advertising work. Commercial lighting gives a different lighting effect and is commonly used to create that “WOW” image.

In addition to the flare described above, we also include a variety of classic poses and lighting options throughout our senior portrait sessions. During the session we are typically photographing not only for the high school senior but also the parents and grandparents.

Here are a few tips for our senior portrait sessions:

  1. What? Our portrait process begins with a phone consultation. During this phone consult we will discuss the individual being photographed and the logistics involved behind the session. In addition, we will discuss clothing attire and overall photography goals of the session. What type of images are you looking for: classic, timeless, indoor, outdoor, contemporary, architecture? These are just a few examples of what we would be discussing during the planning phase. From studio to destinations, we have the experience to photographed most of our client’s requests.  We recommend that you review our portfolio or call the studio to discuss your vision and thoughts.
  1. When and Where? Portrait sessions may be scheduled during the week, and we do offer limited Saturday sessions as well. A note about location photography assignments: some locations with Houston do require a photographer’s permit to photograph on their grounds.  If a photographer’s permit is required, please note this fee is an additional charge. Some locations will photograph better in the morning versus the afternoon. Also, if you are wanting to have hair and makeup services added to your session, we need to consider that when scheduling your session time as well.
  1. The Objective. As a Houston Senior Portrait Photographer, our style is commonly defined as unique, clean and refreshing. Our senior sessions are not your traditional senior cap and gown photography sessions. For in studio senior portrait sessions, each high school senior’s session is created using custom studio sets and the theme is based on the senior’s personality and the artist’s creative vision. Certified Professional Photographers

If you visit our websites often, you may have seen a new logo or professional designation by our names: CPP. What is a CPP? What does that really mean? CPP stands for Certified Professional Photographer. Certification is only granted by Professional Photographers of America (PPA), the world’s largest non-profit association organized for professional photographers. Michael Carr, CPP, recently earned this professional designation. I had to pass a written question test, as well as submit a portfolio or body of work for review. My portfolio had to demonstrate specific lighting, posing, color balance, and harmony in our photographs. In February 2016, over 80 photographers submitted their portfolios, and only 50% passed and earned the CPP designation. To maintain this credential, I have to recertify every 3 years. This process insures photographers remain current in our photographic field and current in our craft.
PPA includes additional info on the CPP standard and you can read about that below:

“These days, photography is practiced by anyone with a smartphone, but it’s mastered by few. When it comes to those once-in-a-lifetime moments—when you’ve got one shot at getting it right—you better make sure the person behind the camera is a pro. A proven professional photographer that is.

There’s no greater proof than when the letters “CPP” follow a photographer’s name. They designate a Certified Professional Photographer, someone who is putting in the extra work to stay above the rest. It assures you of this photographer’s professional knowledge and experience, while also declaring that photographer as one who has achieved and maintains a higher standard.

See the Difference Certified Professional Photographers Make

Consistency. CPPs know how to achieve great results—every time. You get a strong collection of images that tell your story, not a few lucky snapshots, and you will work with someone who knows how to produce a quality image under any circumstances.

Technical Skills. CPPs are more than picture takers. They are students of art, lighting, posing, fashion and even interior design. They combine these elements to create images that fit your unique style and become works of art you will treasure for generations.

Unique Artistry. CPPs have the skills to create unique, customized works of art—not cookie-cutter pictures. They follow an artistic vision. It’s your story captured as a collection of art.

Professionalism. When you hire a CPP, you know you’re getting someone who is willing to go the extra mile to deliver the best possible images. They are business owners who thrive on customer service and satisfaction, and they continuously aim to produce products that exceed your—and their—best expectations. These images are keepsakes whose stories you’ll tell time and time again and treasure forever.

Just about anyone can take a good picture every now and then. But when life’s biggest moments are unfolding and there’s just one chance to capture that perfect memory, don’t risk it. Entrust your photography needs to a Certified Professional Photographer and see the difference for yourself.”
