1. Be timeless.

Classic clothes will never go out of style and will always look good in photos. Clothing can easily date your portrait. For that reason, we often suggest simple clothing with a timeless cut and style. Long-sleeves work for most portraits, taking attention away from the arms and keeping focus on the faces and express.

2. Coordinate your outfits.

Family portraits are an occasion to look your best. You don’t have to match but try getting everyone to wear variations of the same color a similar style of clothing for a cohesive look. Clothes should complement each other.

3. Choose colors that complement each other.

When you’re picking out clothes for a family portrait, it’s important to choose colors that compliment each other. You don’t want anyone to stick out like a sore thumb! Neutral colors, cool tones, light colors, or analogous colors typically work well together.

4. Patterns or too many colors.

Bold patterns and bright colors can be distracting in portraits and take away from the focus on your faces. But if its your style, you may want to consider pairing bold patterns with solids. Try to avoid wearing clothing with large logos or too many colors. If everyone in the portrait is wearing a different color, it will be hard for the eye to know where to rest.

5. Make sure everyone is comfortable in their clothes.

This may seem like an obvious one, but you’d be surprised how often people show up to a session uncomfortable in what they’re wearing. If your clothes are too tight, you’ll be pulling at them the entire time and you won’t look relaxed. If your shoes are uncomfortable, you’ll be thinking about them the whole time. It’s important to be comfortable in what you’re wearing so that you can relax and enjoy the session.

6. Accessorize tastefully.

Less is usually more when it comes to accessories. A few simple pieces can go a long way. If you’re going to wear jewelry, make sure it’s not too flashy or distracting. The same goes for any other accessories you might be wearing, like scarves, hats, or glasses. A simple necklace or scarf can add a touch of personality to your outfit without looking too overdone.

7. Bring a change of clothes.

If you have an outfit you love but it’s not quite right for the session, consider bringing a change of clothes. This is especially important if you’re doing an outdoor session and your outfit doesn’t work with the location. It’s also a good idea to bring a change of clothes if you have small children who might get dirty during the session. If you’re not sure what to wear, bring a backup outfit just in case.

By following these tips, you’ll be sure to look great in your next family portrait!
