Houston newborn and family photography

Lisa Carr, with Michael Carr Photography, is a newborn photographer in Houston. She recently photographed this baby girl when she was 1 month old. It is recommended that you photographed newborns between 7-12 days old. If you are a new Mom, or have never had your newborn photographed professionally you may be wondering why. This time frame is recommended so that your baby will sleep a bit more and so that they are still flexible since their bones and muscles have not fully developed. Babies that are older than this will typically stretch out more and reach out more with their hands during their sessions, and also may not want to be scrunched up or swaddled. We always receive calls after a baby has been born, and Moms are panicked because they did not pre-schedule their baby’s newborn session weeks in advance. We always leave room in our calendars for these last minute sessions. We also believe that it is very important to have your newborn’s photographed even if they are older than the recommended time frame of 7-12 days old. We know older babies will need to be handled differently and accommodations made for extra feedings during the session. Also we love to capture awake babies during the newborn session, and we allow extra time for these poses as well:

We also love to capture Family Portraits during the newborn session.

Women Portraits
5 Women’s Casual Business Portrait Tips

1. In-Studio Sessions

In-studio Portrait sessions are ideal for busy female professionals. At Michael Carr Photography, we offer a professional studio within a commercial office building. Amenities include a controlled environment, a full dressing room, wifi, and on-set viewing of your session images as they are being captured. Each Women’s Casual Business Portrait begins with a consultation to discuss your session goals, where the images will be used for marketing collateral, and what format and sizes are required for final images. At the end of your portrait session, you will review your images and make your selections. A digital artist will edit your final images in digital enhancement software to soften puffiness under the eyes, minimize smile lines and refine your portrait.

2. Attire & Accessories
For the Women’s Casual Portrait, we want the portrait to emphasize you. Blouses, skirts, dresses, and jackets should be in a solid color or have a light pattern. Feel free to bring up to 3-5 clean, well-pressed outfits to your session. If you normally wear glasses, wear them in your portrait. Lastly, when it comes to jewelry, less is best. We recommend wearing pearls or diamonds for a classic and polished look.

Women Business Photographer

3. Grooming
Female professionals should have their hair and make-up done by a professional hairstylist and makeup artist the day of your session. A professional makeup artist will highlight your best features and choose the right colors to compliment your outfit for your photography session. We are happy to provide recommendations upon request. Also, consider your hands as they may show in your portrait. Some clients opt to get a manicure before their session and select a clear polish or neutral color for their nails.

4. Background Selection & Image Usage
Depending on your image specs and requirements, we will select a white, graphite or gray background that will compliment your attire. Please know in advance if your business portrait is head and shoulders or ¾ length or full-body length. Also please provide us any specific website or file specs you have for your final digital images.

5. Posing and Expression

To capture your executive presence, we recommend an expression that exudes confidence and leadership traits. Be careful with the excessive head tilting or straight on approach in your casual Business Portrait. For some, a closed mouth expression with a slight expression in the eyes works best. For others, a slight expression in the smile and eyes works better. In either case, approachability is the key. Proper body language and posing are as important as expression and clothing. As in any profession, the quality is in the details.

Contemporary Men’s Portrait Photography:
Feel Empowered By Your Own Image

In today’s digital world, we rely less on face to face introductions and focus more on LinkedIn profiles and website business headshots. People want to do business with people they trust and connect with.

Michael Carr, a Contemporary Portrait Photographer in Houston, photographs business professionals, entrepreneurs, physicians, and public figures who want magazine-quality portraits for their website, social media platforms, and marketing collateral to promote their business and control their digital narrative.

Most men are uncomfortable in front of the camera or dislike photographs of themselves. Imagine, a portrait session where you feel empowered by your own image.

Contemporary Men’s Portrait Photography

Our Contemporary Men’s Portrait Photography sessions are designed to make you look natural, masculine, and confident in front of the camera.  Here are a few ways we guide you through the photography session to make you look your best.

1. Start with a Consultation

Each Men’s Contemporary Portrait session begins with a consultation to review your session goals, where the images will be used for marketing collateral, and what format and sizes are required for final images.

2. Decide What to Wear to Your Men’s Contemporary Photography Session

Men’s Contemporary Photography sessions focus on you. Your clothing should reflect your professional style and the business image you want to deliver as part of your personal brand.  For men, we suggest the following attire:

  • The corporate look is a suit jacket, dress shirt, and tie.
  • A casual business look is often a jacket and open dress shirt, or dress shirt on its own.
  • For a no-jacket casual look, bring several colored shirts – ideally darker than your skin tone.
  • For photography purposes, a white dress shirt by itself is not recommended for everyone.  However, a white dress shirt underneath a sports coat photographs well on most men.
  • If you are not sure, feel free to bring a few different jackets, shirt colors and ties so we can assist you with selections.
  • If you tend to have a 5 o’clock shadow in the afternoon, either schedule your session for a morning time slot or plan on shaving before your session if it is in the afternoon.

3. Feel at Ease During Your Men’s Contemporary Portrait Session

A traditional headshot may focus on matching a corporate intent or require a generic lighting style that is consistent for most type of subjects. For Men’s Contemporary Portrait sessions, Houston photographer, Michael Carr uses a mixture of dramatically lit photographs using solid backgrounds to bring focus to the subject.  Some sessions include elements of simple furnishings to create a more casual portrait image.

To make clients feel at ease during the portrait session, Michael Carr directs each client on body language and posing techniques. In addition, our Houston-based photography studio offers on-set viewing of your session images as they are being captured. This will enhance your portrait session by viewing captured images in real time while on set. When a client sees a preview of their contemporary images, it makes them feel confident in front of the camera.

4. Design Your Men’s Contemporary Portraiture Collection

At the end of your portrait session, you will review your images and make your selection for your Men’s Contemporary Portraiture Collection. Our men’s portrait sessions are time efficient and typically completed within 45 minutes.  A digital artist will edit your final images in digital enhancement software to soften puffiness under the eyes, minimize smile lines and refine the portrait.

From the final images, clients select a collection of custom framed prints to display in their office, home, and to give as gifts to loved ones.

Outdoor Family Portraits in Houston

Spring is approaching and this is the perfect time to photograph your outdoor family portraits in Houston! Michael Carr, one of Houston’s top family photographers, has over 20 years of photographic experience to make sure your Family Portrait is beautifully crafted. We will help you with coordinating and planning for your family portrait to make sure everyone looks their best.

Helpful Tips for Your Outdoor Family Portrait

1. Scheduling.

The timing of your family portrait session is very important. We recommend early morning, around 9am, or late afternoon, around 5pm. As summer approaches, 6:30pm may become an option. We use available lights along with light modifiers and off camera lighting equipment to insure everyone is lit properly and no one has dark eyes in the final portrait. We will work with you to determine the best time of day for your portrait based on the location as well.

If young children are to be included in your portrait, you should pick the time that is not right during their nap time but when they are at their best. For outdoor portraits we always recommend scheduling two dates in the event of rain or bad weather. We do have a studio available which can also serve as an option for your family portrait should weather become an issue.

2. Clothing Selection.

Everyone’s clothing does not need to match in colors, but there should be harmony with everyone’s attire in the portrait. For example, if you want a casual spring or summer portrait then the children could wear shorts with light colored tops or dresses, and the adults could wear casual pants and khakis with light colored shirts and blouses. Colors should be complimentary and in the same tonal range. It is always recommended to stick to solid colors or a very small pattern. Long sleeve shirts work best as well. We will discuss your portrait vision and clothing options during your pre-portrait consultation.

3. Hair and Makeup.
For men and children in the portrait, we recommend a hair trim 2 weeks before your portrait. For ladies, a trim or haircut and color if needed 2 weeks before your portrait as well. This is not the time to try a new hair color or a new haircut or hair style! We partner with a nearby salon that takes care of our client’s hair and makeup for their portrait. The salon will help you look your best and make sure you are picture perfect. Remember to have a manicure and pedicure the day before your portrait too! On the day of your portrait bring a brush, powder, and makeup for touchups during your session.

4. Get Plenty of Rest.
Rest is so important before your portrait. If you are tired it will show in your images. Go to bed early and stay hydrated before your portrait.

5. Portrait Location and Scale.
During your consultation, we will discuss where you plan on hanging your selected portrait in your home. This is important for us photography wise so we capture your images with the end in mind. For example, if the space warrants a vertical portrait, we want to make sure we have plenty of vertical images for you to select from. During your portrait order appointment, we will project your images in our studio and can also show you the proper size portrait based on the space in your home where the portrait will reside.
